Amsterdam Off To Winning Ways!

The European GAA season is officially underway for Amsterdam GAC and its three teams, after last weekends Benelux Round 1 tournament in Den Haag.

The Amsterdam Shield team took home the first honours of the year, by winning the inaugural Benelux Shield tournament, with three wins out of three including victories over Düsseldorf and a hard fought three point victory in extra time over Belgium in the final.

Five debuts for the club were made on the day including Ruairi Lehmann who took home the well deserved player of the tournament award!

The Shield team have set down the marker for the 2012 season, and they will look to carry on their good form with the remaining three Benelux tournaments in Amsterdam, Brussels, and Maastricht before moving onto the European Shield competition in the late summer where Amsterdam as reigning champions will defend its European Shield title.

Holland Ladies were extremely unlucky not to take home a second trophy on the day for Amsterdam, after missing out to Belgium ladies in the final. The ladies who had strong numbers in their squad, looked to carry on their winning ways after beating Belgium in the Hague Invitational a month ago.

Two great victories earlier in the day over both Belgium teams put Holland in the final as the favourites, but a resilient Belgium team fought back to prevent Holland claiming back to back tournament wins.

Great performances throughout the day by all the team, and special mention to Aggie, Kate, and Siobhan who made their debuts for the club. Well done girls!

The Amsterdam Championship team also make a good start by claiming a big victory over rivals Den Haag in the opening match of the day. Strong performances during the day by Colm Brennan and Stephen Cleary put the Amsterdam lads in contention for the trophy, but were unlucky to lose out to Belgium later in the day after losing captain Derek Lowry earlier in the tournament to injury.

Overall a good day for the team, and they will have a number of weeks before the next Benelux tournament in Amsterdam in May, with the focus now on the upcoming training camp with Tir Chonaill Gaels coach Mickey Kelly in Amsterdam on April 14th and 15th.

Well done to all three teams!
