Amsterdam Shield Squad Make It 2-in-a-Row!!

Amsterdam Shield squad remains the only undefeated Benelux team in any competition in 2012, after they claimed their second in a row Benelux Shield trophy, at the recent Amsterdam tournament.

After winning the first ever Benelux Shield tournament in late March, Amsterdam Shield squad were determined to make it two in a row against competition from Belgium, Dusseldorf, and Luxembourg.

An early victory over Dusseldorf on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-3, was followed by a hard fought draw against rivals Belgium, with a last minute '45' kick from Aidan Hartigan securing the result and keeping Amsterdam undefeated. Belgium had regrouped after their two defeats by Amsterdam in March, and will be strong opposition throughout the year.

Up next were Luxembourg, and there was plenty of excitement throughout in a match where Amsterdam came out of on top by two points courtesy of a wonder goal from Rob Ducie who had just arrived back from Ireland during the morning, where he had spent the previous 5 days cycling the Malin to Mizen Head 400+ mile challenge! Showing no signs of fatigue, Ducie picked up the ball at the sideline and managed to lob the Lux keeper for the winning goal.

Belgium faced off against Dusseldorf in the 3rd/4th place playoff, and Belgium came out on top by four points, but a valiant Dusseldorf will look back on the day with pride, with taking their first ever point in European GAA competition (a draw against Lux), and their key player Dave McGuinness named Shield player of the tournament...well done lads, keep it going!

Mirroring the championship final, the Shield final was also contested by Amsterdam and Luxembourg. With strong performances by Paddy McShane, Tadhg O'Shea and Jack Gorman, Amsterdam came out on top by three points to defeat Luxembourg for a second time on the day, and more importantly, claim back to back tournament wins.

Great performances by all, and a number of fine debuts made in the Amsterdam team by Andres, Eric, Mick and Tim. Well done to all, and roll on Brussels on June 23rd to make it three in a row!
