2016 Season is Here!

With the new season just days away for members of Amsterdam and Holland Ladies teams, here’s hoping 2016 will be as successful as 2015 for the club!

The men’s team had their most successful year in 2015, and had a great start by winning the Benelux Championship including big wins in the Frankfurt and Luxembourg regional tournaments. The focus switched from 11 aside to 15 aside competition as Amsterdam successfully defended their European Senior title against Belgium GAA and qualified for the Leinster Junior Championship for the second consecutive year.

The team was very unlucky to lose out in the Leinster Championship to Longford champs, Killashee in October. Leading throughout the match until the last 5 minutes, Killashee fought back with 2 goals to claim a 3 point victory. Disappointing for all involved, but still a proud day for the club to be competing in Leinster, and the ‘Dam will be all out to make it 3 in a row European titles and have another crack at making it to Croke Park.

The European 11 aside championship finished out the year for the men, and we secured our first European 11’s championship by prevailing in A Estrada, Spain with a victory over Paris in the finals.

A great year overall and big thanks to captain Colm Brennan for his hard work throughout the season and leading us to our record haul of trophies.

Holland Ladies had a big year in both football and camogie, and saw a big rebuilding of the team after the departure of many long-standing players. Karen Maguire took the reins of the football team and Amy Franck oversaw the camogie team, whilst many new players made their mark on the field including Tavia Evans and Rosie Young.

Highlights of the year for the ladies included trips to Copenhagen for a European Camogie round, and Vienna for the European football finals. 2015 also featured a team-up by Holland and Luxembourg to take on Belgium in the European 15’s final. The girls ran them very close but just missed out in securing the win.

Ronan Fraser led the line for the Amsterdam hurlers and 2015 saw a record number of new players join the ranks. With 5 hurling tournaments of the agenda for 2016, and the tactical genius of Fergal Walsh in charge, big things are expected of the hurlers this year.

Off the pitch, we were delighted to receive strong support from our sponsors, Dan Murphy’s, who provided us with a new team kit, and arranged for the club to get a great weekend training session from Clare football manager, Colm Collins. Thanks to Karlo and all the team in Dan's for their continued support.

Also big thanks to Dornan Engineering who provided us with two sets of training kits, and O’Casey’s Bar for sponsoring new Holland Ladies jerseys.

Our Christmas Party was a great night and many beers toasted a successful year. Congrats again to all our award winners:

Finally, we had our 2016 AGM in January and elected a new committee. Big thanks in particular to our long serving secretary, Tadhg O’Shea, who stepped down after 8 years. The club wouldn’t be where it is today without the hard work of Tadhg and many of our past committee members.

The AGM also marked the end of Derek McElhinney's two year term as chairperson. Derek did a terrific job...and as punishment, has been made the secretary! Chairperson duties have been handed over to one of our most respected club members and die-hard GAA man, Martin McClean!

2016 Committee:
Martin McClean - Chairman
Derek McElhinney - Secretary
Laura Cronin & Mike Walsh - PR Officers
Peter Harpur - Treasurer
Colm Brennan – Football Officer
Fergal Walsh – Hurling Officer
Karen Maguire – Ladies Officer
Joan McNulty – Fundraising Officer

Our first social event of the year also took place at the start of February with a pub quiz in Dan Murphy's. Thanks to Niall, Katie, and Joan for organising and a great turnout with 14 teams. Thin Quizzy just pipped Caitriona & the Waves at the post to the win!

So we're all set for the year ahead, with training resuming next Monday, February 22nd at 19:15hrs at our pitch in Sportlaan. All new players are very welcome to get in touch with our committee and join in for what will be a great season!

Amsterdam Abu!
