On June
14th 2013, cars left Amsterdam, Schiphol, Harlem, Utrecht and Groningen
carrying Amsterdam GAC and Holland Ladies footballers towards Luxembourg to
take part in Round 3 of the Benelux Football Championships 2013.
It turned
out to be a journey worth making. Both teams won their respective competitions,
with Amsterdam GAC winning the Mens Football Championship and Holland Ladies
victorious in the Ladies Football Championship. Our players also picked up the
Player of the Tournament Awards in both competitions to round off a fantastic
day for both teams. Congratulations to Gerry Sheridan and Niamh Richardson on
their awards.
Despite
losing out in a hard fought opening group game to Luxembourg, Amsterdam GAC
progressed to the final after beating Belgium in the second group game. In the
final, Amsterdam managed to turn the tables on hosts Luxembourg securing a 2
point victory.
Amsterdam's
ability to get goals at crucial times proved to be the difference on the day.
There were outstanding performances all over the pitch, particularly from Kevin
O'Connor at full back (not to mention one of the best half time talks
ever!!!!), Rory McHugh in Midfield and Gerry Sheridan at Full Forward.
Not to
be outdone by their male counterparts the Holland Ladies showed their class in
defeating Luxembourg, Belgium A and Belgium B to take the honours in the Ladies
Championship with great performances from defender Clare Kavanagh, and
midfielders Rose Holland and Niamh Richardson.
